Since independence, tourism has become one of the most important industries in Namibia. Current employment figures, the earning of foreign exchange and creation of additional employment possiblities are contributing positively to Namibia's economic development. The Namibian government as well as the Namibian private sector stress the importance of adequate training as a prerequisite to realise the full potential of tourism.

After many exploratory meetings between various stakeholders, the Namibian Academy for Tourism and Hospitality (NATH) was formally established on 8th August 1994.

NATH is a non-profit organisation which has since its establishment worked to maintain and increase excellence in the tourism industry. The courses offered by NATH are recognised both in the SADC region and internationally.

NATH has been recognised by the NTB as the official academy for tour guide training.
